Tree Stump Removal Methods

Posted on: 16 December 2014

If you have recently had a tree removed from your property, you are most likely left with a stump reminding you about the previous inhabitant. There are many ways that you can remove a stump from your property. If you do not have the money to have a professional come and take it away for you, you may be able to take matters into your own hands and remove the stump yourself. Here are some of the methods used in stump removal for you to try.

Burning

You can burn a stump to the ground until it is just a pile of ash. To do this, you need to make sure that there is going to be a dry spell in the area where there is no expected precipitation for a week or so. You will want to get the stump dry so that it burns easily. Drill a few holes into the top of the stump using a power drill. Pour some kerosene or gasoline into the holes and allow to sit inside the top of the stump for several days so that it saturates the interior of the stump.

Set the stump on fire, making sure that you have a garden hose and fire extinguisher nearby if things get out of hand. You will want to keep someone near the stump to make sure that it does not catch anything else on fire in your yard. After the fire is controlled, it will continue to smoke for several days from the inside.

Chemicals

The chemical removing process will work similar to burning. You will need to drill holes in the top of the stump and pour in chemicals meant to deteriorate tree stumps. You can find this in the garden section of a hardware store. Read the package directions thoroughly. This method may take several weeks for the stump to become weakened enough to break apart.

Stump Grinding

You can rent a stump grinder from a local hardware store that rents tools. Use the grinder to grind the stump down to a fine sand. Make sure to read any instructions given to you when renting, and wear safety goggles and gloves while handling the equipment.

Decorating

You could always try to decorate the stump to become part of your landscaping. You can drill out the top portion of the stump and fill with dirt. Plant some pretty flowers inside and you will have a flower planter. You could also decorate the top using paint. Paint a checkerboard on top and use it for an outdoor game table.
