How To Make Your Beautiful Car Paint Job Last

Posted on: 10 April 2015

If you love your car's paint job, you should take steps to try to protect the paint job from wear and tear. It may take a bit of time and effort, but doing so will ensure that your car looks its best. Follow these steps to protect your car's paint job.

Wash Your Car Routinely

Make sure that you regularly wash your car. At the very least, you should routinely take your car through a car wash, though the best car wash would be a no-touch one that uses clean water because the brushes can ruin the paint job. If a bird poops on your car, you will want to have it washed within three days because bird poop can damage your paint job.

If you are going to wash your car in the sun, make sure that you wash your car properly. Use plain water first to make your entire car wet. Use the water to rinse off loose dirt. While dirt might seem insignificant, it can cause small paint scratches.

Don't Splash Gasoline On Your Car

In a hurry to get home from the gas station, you can damage your paint job with the gasoline. Try to avoid topping off your gas because this will increase the chances that gasoline will drip on your paint and damage it. Also, wipe off any gasoline that does splash onto your car.

Cover Your Car

Whenever possible, you should have your car covered. It is hard to predict what can land on your car that could damage the paint. For example, if there is a wildfire, the ashes can damage your paint job. Also, sunlight alone can be harmful to your car's paint job.

Protect It from the Sun

To protect your car from the sun, try to park it in a shaded area whenever possible. Try to park close to a building or nearby trees with a thick canopy. If you expect your car to sit outside for a long period, consider covering it with a car cover. Fortunately, some car paints come with UV inhibitors. However, these inhibitors are not capable of protecting your paint job in the long-term, so you will still need to take protective measures.

Don't Forget to Wax

Waxing your car is also critical for protecting the paint job. Not only does the wax make the paint look better, but it also acts as a protective coating. Carnauba wax is your best option. While carnauba wax is not 100%, it should be at least 33%. Waxes advertised as 100% carnauba only refer to the purity of the carnauba itself, not the entire product.
