Choosing Energy Efficient Replacement Windows

Posted on: 16 December 2015

If you have older windows in your home, they are not as energy efficient as they should be. In order to improve your heating and cooling costs, you should consider installing replacement windows. While replacing your windows represents a significant cost, they with both help to improve the look of your home as well as to improve your home's energy efficiency.

Choose Vinyl Windows

Vinyl windows are good for your home for several reasons. For one, vinyl will prevent heat transfer just as well as wood will, but they will not be as heavy as wood. Furthermore, vinyl does require glue, wood, or fasteners to hold the frame of the window together, so they tend to be much more structurally sound.

Multiple Panes

Windows on older homes will have a single pane of glass. The problem with this setup is that your furnace will heat up your windows from the outside even as the wind cools the windows down on the outside. The combined effect of these two factors is that your home will bleed heat to the outside world. By using multiple panes of glass with a layer of gas in between, you can isolate the inside pane from the air outside, which will help to reduce heat transfer through the windows.

Designer Gases

Older double-pane windows will use oxygen between the panes of glass. For increased energy efficiency, you need to consider using a noble gas such as argon or krypton, Both options are more dense than oxygen and will thus reduce heat transfer as well as to reduce noise transmission.

Window Films

Many new windows will have a transparent film which will filter out UV rays, which could otherwise heat up the interior surfaces of your home. The same films can also reflect heat back into your home during this winter. In this way, the right films can reduce your heating costs by 25 percent and your cooling costs by up to 23 percent.

Windows are a key component of your home's insulation envelope. If you fall in love with an older home, but you are worried about its energy efficiency, one of the best things you can do to rein in out-of-control heating and cooling costs is to replace your old windows. You will improve the look of your home at the same time that will give your home a facelift. Make sure you do your research to make sure you get the most value for your money.
