Good Uses For Recyclable Items

Posted on: 9 March 2016

You can put some of your recyclables to good use so they get used for other purposes around your home. This can help you to get them out of the way, save you money by using them to take care of specific needs and even offer you enjoyment and fun while you get creative. Learn how to repurpose your glass jars, plastic bottles and cardboard boxes in this article.

Turn glass jars into piggy banks

You can take your glass jars, clean them and remove their labels. Paint the outside of the jars and the lids in a base color of an animal that you want your piggy bank to look like. You can go with a soft pink for a pig, brown for a horse, white with brown or black splotches for a cow, gray for a donkey or green for a frog.

Once the paint dries, you can use a black permanent marker to draw on all the features, such as the eyes, nose, mouth and other features. Take a small amount of paint and fill in any other colored areas, like the whites and pupils of the eyes, the punk part of the nose, white teeth and so on. Cut a slit into the lid that's large enough to fit quarters into and put the lid on the jar. Now you have a unique piggy bank you can use to save your change.

Turn plastic bottles into emergency food supply containers

If you are a person who likes to prepare for emergencies then you want to start putting some of those two liter plastic bottles to good use. You can use them to store such foods as rice, beans, oatmeal, flour, sugar and more.

The first thing you want to do is clean all the drink out of the bottles and allow them to dry completely. Then, put a funnel into the opening. Pour the food you intend to store into the bottle. Then, add in an O2 absorber that will absorb the oxygen to help preserve the food for much longer. These bottles can be stacked along a wall on their sides so you can store a lot of food in a smaller space.

Turn a cardboard box into a cat scratching post

Using some cardboard boxes to make a scratching post for your cat will make your cat happy while saving your furniture. To make the post, you want to cut a box and lay it flat. Remove the flaps and set them aside. Roll the cardboard tightly into a tube. If you need to, roll that piece into another, until you get a post of your desired thickness.

Use duct tape around the post so it maintains its shape. Take one final piece of cardboard and use hot glue to add it to the outside of the post so the duct tape won't be visible. Use the hot glue gun to glue one end of the post to a piece of wood. Set the post where your cat will enjoy using it. You can sprinkle cat nip down in the tube to get your cat more interested in it.

Now that you have a few ideas of some good ways to repurpose your recyclables, you can get some of them out of the way and put them to good use. You can then recycle whatever is left or come up with other great uses for them. Contact a business, such as Sunwest Metals Inc, for more information about recycling.
